John Clement Studebaker (son of Clement Studebaker and Sarah Rensel) was born February 8, 1799, Westmorland, PA, and died in 1877 in South Bend, St. Joseph, IN. John Studebaker (1799–1877) moved to Ohio in 1835 with his wife Rebecca (née Mohler) (1802–1887).
Today, Studebaker is fondly remembered for the curvy, sweeping designs of the Starlight, Champion and Commander models of the late 1940s and 1950s. Studebaker merged with luxury automaker Packard in the late 1950s; Packard soon folded thereafter.
Studebaker is “First by Far with a Postwar Car.” The company’s new 1947 Champions and Commanders debut in May and feature radical styling by Raymond Loewy Associates. Studebaker establishes itself as a styling leader.
