Mar 20, 1982 · Featured review. 9/10. a classic of bunraku, beautifully shot. With a cinematography of Kazuo Miyagawa (Rashoomon, Ugetsu Monogatari...), no need to say this movie is beautifully shot.

For Tokubei, suicide is the only honorable act left; for Ohatsu, it is the only emotionally viable one. A bunraku puppet drama of the courtesan Ohatsu and her lover, Tokubei, a soy-sauce merchant whose fortunes have gone awry through the perfidy of a trusted associate.
Director Midori Kurisaki (Japanese: 栗崎 碧, stage name as actress Satoko Minami) convinced Living National Treasure puppeteers Tamao Yoshida and Minosuke Yoshida to let her take their puppets outdoors for live action filming outside the traditional Bunraku theatre – the first time anyone had filmed such a performance in outdoor scenery.
