    Thomas McDermott Jr. served in the U.S. Navy from 1988 to 1994. McDermott earned an undergraduate degree from Purdue University Northwest and a law degree from the University of Notre Dame Law School. He has been affiliated with the U.S. Conference of Mayors, Indiana Bar Association, The Friendly Sons of Erin, and Indiana Society of Chicago.
