Guan Yu ( [kwán ỳ] ⓘ; d. January or February 220 [a] ), courtesy name Yunchang, was a Chinese military general serving under the warlord Liu Bei during the late Eastern Han dynasty of China. Along with Zhang Fei, he shared a brotherly relationship with Liu Bei and accompanied him on most of his early exploits.
Guan Yu was a major character in "Romance of the Three Kingdoms", a semi-historical novel written by Luo Guanzhong at the end of the Yuan Dynasty period (1279–1368). Stories of Guan Yu's exploits were romanticized in the novel.
The Guan Yu Statue was a large monument to Chinese deified military general Guan Yu that was formerly located in Jingzhou, China. The statue was designed by Han Meilin, and finished construction in 2016. It stands at 58 metres tall, weighs 1,197 tonnes, and is made of around 4,000 bronze strips.
Few historical personages are as venerated in the Chinese-speaking world as Guan Yu, who counts Guan Laoye (Grandpa Guan), Guan Gong (Duke Guan), and Guan Di (Emperor Guan), among his litany of officially bestowed titles.

When Guan Yu meets his end in 219, the blade is given to Pan Zhang by Sun Quan for his role in capturing Guan Yu. During the Battle of Yiling, Guan Yu's son Guan Xing kills Pan Zhang when the latter is stunned by a vision of Guan Yu's spirit.
