- Whale Shark (Rhincodon typus) The whale shark is the largest shark species, and also the biggest fish species in the world. Whale sharks can grow to 65 feet in length and weigh up to 75,000 pounds.
- Basking Shark (Cetorhinus maximus) Basking sharks are the second-largest shark (and fish) species. They can grow to up to 40 feet long and weigh up to 7 tons.
- Shortfin Mako Shark (Isurus oxyrinchus) Shortfin mako sharks are thought to be the fastest shark species. These sharks can grow to a length of about 13 feet and a weight of about 1,220 pounds.
- Thresher Sharks (Alopias sp.) There are three species of thresher sharks: the common thresher (Alopias vulpinus), pelagic thresher (Alopias pelagicus), and the bigeye thresher (Alopias superciliosus).
Several species are apex predators, which are organisms that are at the top of their food chain. Select examples include the bull shark, tiger shark, great white shark, mako sharks, thresher sharks, and hammerhead sharks. Sharks are caught by humans for shark meat or shark fin soup.
Sharks can rouse fear and awe like no other creature in the sea. Find out about the world's biggest and fastest sharks, how sharks reproduce, and how some species are at risk of extinction.
Learn about the over 1,000 species of sharks and rays, their importance for marine ecosystems, and the threats they face from overfishing, demand for fins, and habitat loss. Find out what WWF is doing to protect these top predators and how you can help.
