The municipality, covering an area of 57.70 km 2 (22.28 sq mi) of which 6.85 km 2 (2.64 sq mi) is water, is located on the Hoeksche Waard island along the Hollands Diep estuary.

Strijen is a former municipality in the Dutch province of South Holland. On 1 January 2019, it was merged with the former municipalities of Binnenmaas, Cromstrijen, Korendijk, and Oud-Beijerland to form the new municipality of Hoeksche Waard
