Alexander Soros (born October 27, 1985, New York City, New York, U.S.) American philanthropist and a son of financier and philanthropist George Soros.

Alexander Soros was born in New York City in 1985 to George Soros and Susan Weber, then a decorative arts specialist. He was George’s fourth child but the first from his marriage to Weber. Soros grew up in the extremely wealthy circles of New York City and Katonah, New York. In a 2012 profile in The New York Times, Soros described growing up with his younger brother, Gregory, under the care of a nanny and the staff of the Soros family’s 14-room estate in Katonah, rarely seeing their father. By the time he was a few years old, his elder half siblings were already adults and out of the house. He often wished for a more “normal” childhood, and his upbringing led to an existential introspection that inspired a passion for the works of Friedrich Nietzsche. His interest in philosophy, as well as his political awakening, later brought him closer to his father and contributed to his active engagement in his father’s philanthropic work.

As a child Soros attended King Low Heywood Thomas (now known as King School), a coed private school in Stamford, Connecticut. In 2009 he graduated from New York University with a bachelor’s degree in history. He later received a doctorate in modern European history from the University of California, Berkeley, in 2018. His dissertation explores the intersection between Jewish identity in Germany, the literature of Heinrich Heine, and the philosophy of Nietzsche.

In 2011, as Soros began taking an active interest in philanthropy, he founded the Alexander Soros Foundation. He dedicated the organization to promoting civil rights, social justice, and education. The foundation generally kept a low profile, however, and in its first decade it provided fewer than 100 grants.

Meanwhile, after his elder half brother, Jonathan, became less involved in their father’s vast enterprise, Soros joined the board of directors for Open Society Foundations, the family’s philanthropic arm. In December 2022 the board elected him as its chair, replacing his aging father. In June 2023 a spokesperson for George Soros announced that he would hand control of his holdings to the younger Soros.
