  4. Chartley Castle lies in ruins to the north of the village of Stowe-by-Chartley in Staffordshire, between Stafford and Uttoxeter. The remains of the castle and associated earthworks are a Scheduled Monument, the site having been protected since 1925.

  5. Like Sheriff Hutton Castle in North Yorkshire, Chartley has large scale ruins; although I respect the rights of private owners, and appreciate that the site can be viewed by prior arrangement, I wonder if English Heritage would make more of this important structure.

  6. Chartley Castle was originally a late 11th century earthwork motte and double bailey fortress, founded by the Earls of Chester. Altered into a stone enclosure castle the early 13th century, it was abandoned by 1485 and described as a ruin in 1545.
