The Norwegian city of Oslo was founded in the year 1040 under the name Ánslo. After being destroyed by a fire in 1624, during the reign of King Christian IV, a new city was built closer to Akershus Fortress and named Christiania in the king's honour.

In 1624 the town of Oslo was completely destroyed by fire. King Christian IV decreed that the town should be moved west, closer to the protection of Akershus Fortress. This new town was called Christiania and was laid out with wide streets which met at right angles, designed to hinder the spread of fire.
