Gqeberha (Xhosa: [ᶢǃʱɛ̀ɓéːxà]; English: / k ɛ ˈ b ɛər x ə / keh-BAIR-khə [3]), formerly known as Port Elizabeth, and colloquially referred to as P.E., [a] is a major seaport and the most populous city in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa.

The best things to do in Port Elizabeth revolve around the city’s history, coastal activities, and wildlife safaris. The city was founded in 1820 by Sir RufaneDonkin, the Governor of the Cape.
- Hobie Beach. A very popular choice for surfers, swimmers, and sunbathers, Hobie Beach plays host to festivals like ‘Splash Festival,’ Beach Volleyball and World Boardsailing Championships.
- King’s Beach. From the harbour to Humewood lies King’s Beach. Ideal for body surfing, sunbathing, and swimming, this beach is a fan favourite. It especially comes alive on Sundays when Beach Front Traders set up shop, ‘picnickers’ make use of the newly upgraded park, and the snack bar is in full swing for those looking for a sweet treat.
- Noordhoek. For the much more experienced boardsailers, Noordhoek has large ocean swells and cross-shore conditions that some describe as ‘an awesome site.’
- Sardinia Bay. Sardinia Bay is an excellent choice for those in the mood for a long beach walk or horse ride along the stretch of coastline. Snorkelling and scuba diving are encouraged as the sealife is abundant, and picnic spots beckon those wanting to while away the day by the ocean.
- Bayworld. Gqeberha has been wedded to the sea for pretty much all of its history. No surprise then that the warm waters of the Indian Ocean play a significant role in modern day Gqeberha too.
- Donkin Reserve. Gqeberha’s Donkin Reserve is an urban park right at the heart of the city. Managing to incorporate much of the region’s history, it contains a number of historic structures and contemporary artworks.
- Fort Frederick. Fort Frederick was built even before Port Elizabeth became Port Elizabeth, and dates to 1799. Overlooking the modern city from its hilltop location, it was constructed by Britain’s Cape Colony.
- King’s Beach. The sands of King’s beach stretch for roughly a mile. They run from the Humewood area to the harbour wall in the centre of the city. With its location so close to the city, it’s the right amount of busy right through the year.

As of 2021, the city was renamed to Gqeberha as a way of restoring lost heritage. The city stretches for 16km along the scenic Algoa Bay and is a major port dating back to the 1820s.
