Sultan Iskandar (known as Tunku Mahmood Iskandar until 1981) was the third and eldest surviving son of Sultan Ismail, (he had two older brothers, both of whom died in infancy) [citation needed] and was born on at 11:30 a.m. 8 April 1932 in the Istana Semayam, Johor Bahru.
Unlike the other Malay states under British protection, however, Johor remained outside of the Federated Malay States (formed in 1895). Under the Bangkok Treaty of 1909, Siam transferred its rights over some of the northern Malay states (Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah, and Perlis) to the United Kingdom.

Sultan Iskandar Ibni Almarhum Sultan Ismail (April 8, 1932 - January 22, 2010) was the sultan of the southern Malay state of Johor. He had held this position since 1981. In the 1960's he won the first Johor Grand Prix. In 1977 he shot and killed a man he thought was a smuggler.
