One of Southern Utah’s truly great drives, the Johnson Canyon Road stretches north from Highway 89 and provides excellent vantage points of the colorful cliffs for which the Grand Staircase region is particularly known.
Johnson Canyon houses Johnson’s Arch – an arch that spans 200 ft. Johnson Canyon is technically part of Snow Canyon State Park, but the trail head is actually before the ranger station. The trail is closed half the year except to guided tours by a ranger as indicated above.

The Johnson Canyon arch, 200 feet across, is one of the principal attractions that bring people to this small canyon. The canyon ends approximately one mile from the start of the trail in this box canyon with spectacular red rock cliffs.
Johnson Canyon Trail is a short, but exciting hike at the mouth of Snow Canyon State Park. It boasts a natural spring, black lava flows, red-rock walls, cottonwood and willow glades, and an impressive arch near the end. There are only minor up-and-downs on this route; the trail gains almost nothing in elevation between the road and the arch.
Dec 22, 2020 · On our last evening on the way back to town, we drove down Johnson Canyon Rd. Now this would have been a perfect ride!! The first 18 miles are a paved road with hardly any traffic.
