In the joke version, I suppose it means that work is a nuisance if you want to devote your time to drinking.

You can say also "le membre viril" (rare) ou "le phallus" (sophisticated) Une "verge" is something to beat somebody else or an animal as a punishment like scourge or whip, you generally say "des verges".
