Jun 20, 2006 · I was wondering whether there was a similar saying in English. "A mali estremi, estremi rimedi" means literally: "To fight extreme evils, use extreme cures". In other words, it is justified to use extreme means to overcome very evil deeds. Debatable philosophy... The saying is a cousin of "Il fine giustifica i mezzi" (the end justifies the means).

For example, no government is perfectly democratic, but people can refer to democracy in their discussions even though perfect democracy doesn't exist in the world.
