Originally inhabited by Agawam or Naumkeag peoples, West Newbury was settled by English colonists in 1635 as part of neighboring Newbury.

In 1820, the Town of West Newbury was incorporated, breaking away from Newburyport and Newbury. There were 1,279 residents reported in the census that year. Established as a farming community, industries also developed in the mid-18 th century.
