  2. Jul 13, 2024 · The standard way to say "hello" in Korean, used between adults who don't know each other, is 안녕하세요 (an-nyeong-ha-se-yo). If you're speaking to friends and relatives, there are more informal greetings you can use.

    • 안녕하세요 (Annyeong Haseyo) – “Hello” This is your most common way to greet someone in Korean. It’s the familiar, polite speech pattern. You use 하세요 (haseyo) to show a bit of extra respect.
    • 안녕 (Annyeong) – “Hi” 안녕 (annyeong) is your informal, casual way to greet those you’re close to, such as friends and family. What’s nice about 안녕 (annyeong) is that it’s used in many ways.
    • 안녕하십니까 (Annyeong Hasimnikka) – “Good Day” Okay, so the literal translation is still “hello” in Korean. But I’m going to explain it as “good day” or even “good day Sir/Madam” because I think of it as a super formal, almost awkward way to greet someone.
    • 여보세요 (Yeoboseyo) – “Hello” Yes, another way to say “hello,” but this one has nothing to do with formality. You only use 여보세요 (yeoboseyo) when you answer the phone.
    • 안녕하세요 (annyeong haseyo) - “Hello” in Korean (formal) “Hello” in Korean literally means “to do peace/well-being”. It’s used as both a question and an answer almost as though asking “Are you doing well?”
    • 안녕 (annyeong) - “Hi” in Korean (informal) To make 안녕하세요 more familiar or informal, you drop the second half of the greeting so that it simply becomes 안녕 (annyeong).
    • 여보세요 (yeoboseyo) - “Hi” (on the phone) in Korean. To say “hi” in Korean on the phone, you use this greeting. It can be used whether or not you know the person calling, so it’s a versatile greeting.
    • 안녕하십니까? (annyeong hasimnikka) - “Hello” (very formal) in Korean. This is the very formal version of “hello” in Korean. It’s used in speeches or the news in Korea and if you want to show a high level of respect to someone when you meet them for the first time.
