In python 2.7 you can use NumPy's numpy.std() gives the population standard deviation. In Python 3.4 statistics.stdev() returns the sample standard deviation. The pstdv() function is the same as numpy.std().
You already have some good answers on calculating standard deviation, but I'd like to add Knuth's algorithm for calculating variance to the list. Knuth's algo performs the calculation in a single pass over the data. Standard deviation is then just the square root of variance, as pointed out above.
But this trick won't work for computing the standard deviation. My final attempts were : df.get_values().mean() df.get_values().std() Except that in the latter case, it uses mean() and std() function from numpy. It's not a problem for the mean, but it is for std, as the pandas function uses by default ddof=1, unlike the numpy one where ddof=0.

The population standard deviation, generally notated by the Greek letter lower case sigma, is used when the data constitutes the complete population. It is difficult to answer your question directly -- sample or population -- because it is difficult to tell what you are working with: a sample or a population.
