Freeport-McMoRan is the world's largest producer of molybdenum and a major copper and gold producer. It was founded in 1912 as a sulfur mining company and later diversified into other minerals and oil and gas.
PT Freeport Indonesia is a subsidiary of Freeport-McMoRan and MIND ID, and one of the world's largest copper and gold producers. It operates in the Grasberg minerals district, Papua, Indonesia, and has open pit and underground mines.
PT Freeport Indonesia (PT-FI) commenced mining operations in 1972 and in 1988 discovered the Grasberg mine. Today, after significant production, the Grasberg mining district contains one of the world’s largest recoverable copper reserve and the largest gold reserve.
