Peckham (/ ˈpɛkəm / PEK-əm) is a district in south-east London, within the London Borough of Southwark. It is 3.5 miles (5.6 km) south-east of Charing Cross. [1] . At the 2001 Census the Peckham ward had a population of 14,720. [2] History.
But Peckham isn’t all about Rye Lane’s rickety shopfronts, crowded arcades and looming tower blocks. The side streets are leafy and low-rise, with cast-iron bollards by artist Antony Gormley.

Peckham is a neighbourhood that really lets you into a true taste of what life is like in London. It’s fun, very delicious, quirky, artistically varied and never, ever boring! We’ve always been fans of this part of London. There’s so much happening here, and it’s one of the most exciting places to visit in the city.
- Browse the various different shops of Rye Lane. Arguably the beating heart of Peckham, Rye Lane offers you a complete sensory overload. There’s the smell of raw meat and fish from the market stalls that line the street, and pumping music from the hair and nail salons that never seem to close.
- Enjoy a wander around the Rye. Speaking of the Rye, the park and the common towards the southern end of the neighbourhood offer 113 acres of open grassland, woods, a lake and gardens for you to enjoy.
- Catch a film at Peckhamplex. This is definitely up there when it comes to the best things to do in Peckham. A beloved Peckham institution, this community-run cinema offers some of the cheapest seats you can find to watch a film in the whole of London.
- Eat to your heart’s content in Ganapati. This laid-back, colourful gem has been heralded as one of the best Indian restaurants in South London, and it’s easy to see why.
- Frank’s Cafe – Bold Tendencies. The original and most popular rooftop bar and social space in Peckham, Frank’s (Cafe) is situated outside on the top floor of a car-park building.
- Bussey Rooftop Bar. We love the Peckham Bussey Rooftop building set-up with its 360 degree views and highest viewpoint. Whilst sometimes seen as a plan B destination if nearby Frank’s Cafe is too full or crowded, Peckham’s Bussey Rooftop Bar has a character all of its own and if anything, the vista here is better.
- Skylight Peckham. Hoping to rival Franks and the Bussey building as the most radical rooftop and hip hang out in Peckham, Skylight is open all year round, with igloos at Christmas and alfresco floral decks in the summer months.
- Brick Brewery. One of South London’s most popular and well-known tap-rooms, Brick Brewery (near Peckham Rye station) has a wide range of craft beers with an outdoor seating area and a smaller indoor area.
