María Clara. María Clara de los Santos is a fictional character in José Rizal 's novel Noli Me Tángere (1887). The beautiful María Clara is the childhood sweetheart and fiancée of the protagonist, Crisóstomo Ibarra, who returns to his Filipino hometown of San Diego to marry her.
Maria Clara was born between Padre Damaso and Doña Pia. With her mother dying in childbirth, Maria Clara was raised the daughter of Capitan Tiago. Childhood friends with Ibarra, she was sent to study in the convent of Sta. Clara.
A woman well-regarded in San Diego for her high social station. Having grown up together as childhood friends, María Clara and Ibarra are engaged to be married, though Father Dámaso —her godfather—is displeased with this arrangement and does what he can to interfere.
