It was developed by DEC employees and later sold to Compaq, who in turn sold it to HP. It was a pioneer of web search, but it was also a victim of its own success and the rise of Google.

AltaVista was a pioneering search engine that was once one of the most popular and advanced on the web. It was created by researchers at Digital Equipment Corporation and sold to Yahoo in 2003. After 18 years, Yahoo shut down AltaVista and redirected it to its own search page.
